If you are here wondering if you want to book your stay at Banana Bungalows, then I’d say - take all the negative reviews seriously. The hostel is sad, dingy, and dirty. I’d maybe pay $10 per night to stay here or camp out or just pay $50-100 extra to get a nice hotel room in Maui - trust me the last option is worth it. This hostel definitely attracts a certain type of crowd whose definition of clean rooms/bathrooms and friendly people might differ from yours. Being a hostel is not an excuse for being dirty and trashy. I have stayed in several hostels, and this was certainly a disappointment, so much so that we just ended up booking a separate hotel room keeping this reservation as is. Yes, wastage of money, but it was needed if one is unable to breath, couldn’t sleep, with a chance of not using the bathrooms for days to avoid risking catching some random bathroom related disease. Dirty bedsheets in the room, dirty towels that people were dropping around all throughout the hostel for somebody to pick up, and poorly ventilated place. Neither is the location great. I also overheard an older couple who regretted booking this place. Honestly, if you can afford the extra $50-100 for a hotel room, just do that instead be here. This hostel might work for most people, but it didn’t work for me and if you have similar doubts, then save your $$$ and enjoy your Maui trip with some privacy in a nice, clean, comfortable hotel.

The experience was amazing I enjoyed my 6 nights here at this hostel…. The staff and the manager are very welcoming , the tour guides Hannah and Billy know how to deliver on making the tours so much fun because of their knowledge , experience , and friendly attitude. Every tour is a 10/10, but My favorite tour was Haleakala because of breathtaking Martian like features, truly a serene landscape. Dallas , Katie g and Zoe are also really awesome, and helpful employees. overall I’m really going to miss this place

This hostel was the only one in the area offering a tour to visit and hike Haleakalā National Park, which ended up being a highlight of my trip. For that reason alone, it was great value to stay here. That said, the hostel itself feels a bit “sad” and outdated. The kitchen has strict hours (8 AM–10 PM), which is frustrating for early risers who want to eat or refill water before heading out to explore the island. My roommate was even told she had to wait until 8 AM to refill her water bottle—how inhumane is that? It’s also a louder hostel compared to others in the area. The female dorm I stayed in was very small, lacked proper ventilation, and felt cramped. The overall cleanliness of the hostel was underwhelming as well. A few other things to keep in mind: they require a $10 cash deposit and charge extra for towels. They advertise free pancakes, but you have to cook them yourself—unlike some competitors nearby that prepare them for you. You most likely meet people fresh out of high-school. Despite these drawbacks, the tour made it worth the stay, and the people were friendly, which was a nice plus. If they improved cleanliness and flexibility with basic amenities, this place would have much more potential.

Staying at Banana Bungalow was an absolutely amazing experience. The staff and other travelers made my travel experience one of the best in my life! I especially loved the daily tours the hostel offered. Zac and Ethan did an amazing job as tour guides. They were friendly, fun, and inclusive of everyone in the group and I felt very safe on all of the tours. The tours offered an easy way to meet other people staying in the hostel as well. Additionally Hannah from reception was very friendly and helpful. Overall my favorite hostel experience thus far. I hope to come back in the future!
